nutation
[nju:'te??(?)n]
¦ noun
1. a periodic variation in the inclination of an axis of rotation, especially that causing the earth's precession to follow a wavy rather than a circular path.
2. Botany the circular swaying movement of the tip of a growing shoot.
Origin
C17 (denoting nodding of the head): from L. nutatio(n-), from nutare 'to nod'.
Nutation
II. Nutation ·noun The act of Nodding.
III. Nutation ·noun The motion of a flower in following the apparent movement of the sun, from the east in the morning to the west in the evening.
IV. Nutation ·noun A very small libratory motion of the earth's axis, by which its inclination to the plane of the ecliptic is constantly varying by a small amount.

TYPE OF MOTION IN ENGINEERING
Nutation (Engineering)
In engineering, a nutating motion is similar to that seen in a swashplate mechanism. In general, a nutating plate is carried on a skewed bearing on the main shaft and does not itself rotate, whereas a swashplate is fixed to the shaft and rotates with it.

Nutation

Nutation (from Latin nūtātiō 'nodding, swaying') is a rocking, swaying, or nodding motion in the axis of rotation of a largely axially symmetric object, such as a gyroscope, planet, or bullet in flight, or as an intended behaviour of a mechanism. In an appropriate reference frame it can be defined as a change in the second Euler angle. If it is not caused by forces external to the body, it is called free nutation or Euler nutation. A pure nutation is a movement of a rotational axis such that the first Euler angle is constant. Therefore it can be seen that the circular red arrow in the diagram indicates the combined effects of precession and nutation, while nutation in the absence of precession would only change the tilt from vertical (second Euler angle). However, in spacecraft dynamics, precession (a change in the first Euler angle) is sometimes referred to as nutation.
